How does one even approach rev challenges in CTFs?

Our Vice President (CTF), Nic, will be delivering a talk on the fundamentals of reverse engineering and binary exploitation.

This will be a slightly more advanced talk, so it would be good to know about function call stacks and memory manipulation ahead of time.
